E3 - 2012 to 2019

Between 2012-2019 I produced GameSpot’s presence at the gaming industry trade show E3.

That presence grew each year, until in 2019 we were hosting 2 live stages at the LA Convention Centre and an eSports truck at LA Live, as well as producing hundreds of editorial interviews and features, and honoring sponsorship deals worth millions of dollars.

By 2017 I held overall responsibility for producing our week-long, 8-hour-a-day live-streamed stage shows, as well as all editorial video content and all sponsored content, with a 7-figure budget, direct responsibility for a crew of 50, and indirect responsibility for roughly 50 more.

My responsibilities included:

  • Building run-of-show and booking talent for 3 live stages.

  • Creative input into all aspects of design and branding.

  • Engaging vendors and 3rd party production companies and ensuring their deliverables.

  • Designing signal flow and managing master control for multiple live feeds.

  • Designing high-volume video publishing workflows to hit multiple channels as fast as possible.

  • Creating video assets for stage monitors, live and on-demand video production, and social media.

I am very proud of what we achieved at E3 during my tenure. Over the years I introduced significant innovations to production:

  • In 2017, we put out a tender and received pitches for an external production company to produce AV on our main stage. This move significantly improved the production quality of our output.

  • In 2018, we decided to split the production of the show between GameSpot’s home base studio in San Francisco and the LA Convention Centre. As well as saving costs, this significantly reduced our time to publish during the crucial press conference phase of the show, which led to a huge increase in traffic as we repeatedly beat our competitors to the punch with publishing speeds. The traffic we achieved in 2018 exceeded the previous 4 years combined.

  • In 2019, we hired a new company to produce our event space and made further efficiencies to our publishing workflow, leading to a 20% increase in traffic year-over-year.
